The August 2016 Farm Rescue took place west of Miles in Qld at a property called Kayton Downs. This trip was a little unique in that 95% of the work for the trip was performed on this single property.
A little over 10 years ago the property owners purchased this property and started building their home. Unfortunately due to illness and drought their home was never finished and instead they have been living in a partially built “shed” which had no inner walls, no running water and 1 power point. This of course made it unbearably hot in summer and extremely cold in the winter. Power cords ran from one end to the other in order to provide light to the bedrooms and bathroom.
The team of volunteers set out to see how much we could do in a week to provide this couple (ages in their 60’s and 70’s). We are very happy to report that the “shed” has become a home with electrical work to provide lighting and electrical outlets completed. A new bathroom complete with new toilet, shower, basin and washing machine outlets completed. The kitchen now has running water and the piping to take away the used water. The entire shed was insulated and sheeting put on the walls. Two new walls were built to create a bedroom and last but not least we managed to finish half the painting.
This was a huge job and the team worked hard to get as much completed as possible. The property owners are understandably over the moon and had a grin from ear to ear as soon as the first sheet went in.
Buy a Bale would like to thank the entire set of volunteers and the locals who supported this venture. Without your help these trips would not be a success and we look forward to working with you all in the future.
